Introduce yourself!

Hi! We are Carissa and Amber Gardner of NaturallyGG.

How long have you been natural (brief natural hair journey)?

We have been relaxer free since October 2011. Carissa did her “big chop” after 3 months of transitioning and Amber big chopped after 8 months of transitioning. It has been an amazing journey thus far!!

We have learned to always always always be patient with natural hair. It was a steep learning curve...

What's your daily hair routine?

We both like to keep our hair stretched 99% of the time! We stretch our hair out with twist, braids, and bantu knots. We like to wear twist outs or braid outs daily and from there we may keep our hair down, pin it up, or put our hair in a ponytail or bun. You can do soooo many styles when your hair is stretched out.

What are your favorite products?

We are not product junkies; however, some of our favorite products include our homemade whipped shea butter (recipe is on our channel) and Shea Moisture's line of products.

What's your nighttime routine?

We usually put our hair in twists or braids to sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet to protect our hair from the cotton in the pillowcase. We recently purchased satin pillowcases for those nights where we are too tired to put on our satin scarf. You have to protect those edges!!

Do you ever get tired of curly/kinky hair?

Amber – Honestly, no. I absolutely love the versatility and texture of my natural hair. The only thing I ever get “tired” of is detangling my hair. Detangling is something you cannot rush. I like to spend at LEAST an hour detangling in small sections.

Carissa – I do NOT ever get tired of having curly/kinky hair. I love the versatility and beauty of my natural hair. When I want a different look, I switch things up by carefully achieving a more straightened look or protective style. But there is nothing like the feeling that comes from fully embracing my natural texture. I feel most beautiful when I’m rocking my natural hair….kinks and all.

On your IG and YouTube channel you inspire women and teach them how to style their hair. What are some of your most important lessons learned on your hair journeys so far?

We have learned to always always always be patient with natural hair. It was a steep learning curve when we first big chopped because we care for our natural hair completely differently from our relaxed hair. To get the certain style you want may take lots of trial and error. You may have to use different products or techniques to get the desired style you want.

When did you start blogging/vlogging?

We started our YouTube channel the year we big chopped which was late 2011. We wanted to start our channel at the beginning of the journey so people could see the progression of our hair.

How did you become successful vloggers?

We try our best to produce good quality and informative videos that people of all ages and textures can learn from and relate to. Also, we maintain a certain level of realness, goofiness and positive energy on our channel. Becoming as successful as we have has been so humbling. We had no idea when we first started vlogging that we would build such a large following of supporters. We feel like our warm spirits help draw people into our channel. We feel so blessed and grateful to be in the position that we are in.

What do you like most about vlogging?

We love to inspire and motivate people. When we meet people that say we helped them on their journey makes us feel AMAZING! It is such a good feeling inspiring women of all ages to be confident in their natural state.

What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

We would like to launch our own website/blog in the summer and we love to do natural hair meet ups and other special events!

Do you have any vlogging advice that you wish someone had told you?

Have thick skin. There will always be people who love everything you say and do… there will likewise always be critics.
