If you’ve been keeping up with the latest buzz in the curly hair world, you may have recently witnessed a Twitter convo about private spaces for Black women and their natural and curly hair— a conversation sparked by Serena Williams’s husband and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian.
Last month, Alexis tweeted about applying to join several natural hair Facebook groups in order to educate himself on taking care of his young daughter, Alexis Olympia’s, naturally curly hair. This tweet jump-started a much larger conversation about who is allowed in online safe spaces for Black women, and if there should be exceptions to the rule. Responses were divided, with some people reassuring Alexis, while others challenged him to find other options where he would not be intruding on Black women’s safe spaces.
Whether you agree or disagree with his approach, the conversation that was born out of Alexis’s tweet shows the importance of fathers taking the initiative to groom their daughters’ hair. Styling children’s hair is too often dismissed as being a mother’s responsibility—but there are plenty of dads who can do it all, from laying edges to bomb twist outs.
